Why a Root Canal May Be Recommended
Root canal treatment can help relieve tooth pain while preserving your natural tooth. It can also help prevent more complex procedures in the future.
By removing the decay and bacteria from the inner parts of the tooth and roots, your dentist can help halt the spread of infection and help restore the healthy tissue that remains.
Most patients experience little discomfort during the procedure. Once the treatment is complete, the tooth is rebuilt and will be fully functional. With proper oral hygiene, a root-treated tooth can last a lifetime.
The Root Canal Procedure
Root canal treatment is a procedure that involves removing infected or damaged tissue, such as nerves and blood vessels, from inside an affected tooth. Without this treatment, the tooth would eventually die and need to be extracted.
The procedure begins with the removal of the diseased tissue. Next, the dentist cleans and disinfects the inside of the tooth, then fills it with a medicated material designed to prevent future infection. Finally, a dental restoration – often a crown – is placed to protect the tooth and restore its full functionality.
